Team of Veterans Sails to End Veteran Suicide at Figawi
Looks to repeat victory while raising funds for America's Warrior Partnership
The Westport Group, a veteran-owned business in Braintree, MA, has teamed with America’s Warrior Partnership (AWP) to race in the Figawi on Memorial Day weekend in Hyannis, MA. The veteran-led team will be sailing to raise awareness and funds to fight veteran suicide, which has struck the Boston area at an alarming rate.
“Our race this year is more important than ever to the community, as Boston is marked by especially high veteran suicide rates,” says AWP CEO Jim Lorraine. “AWP is bringing attention and aid to the devastatingly high occurrences of veteran suicide across the nation through our Operation Deep Dive initiative.”
The team found success at last year’s Figawi with a division victory. This year, they are looking to defend their title, on a boat aptly named Defender.
Bringing aid and awareness to veterans’ causes is a mission close to our hearts" said Defender Captain Martha Kristian. "And to do so in such a light-spirited, competitive way is truly affirming – not to mention how good it will feel to kick some butt again this year.”
The Defender will be manned by veterans including:
- Jim Lorraine, AWP President and CEO, former Deputy Command Surgeon U.S. Special Ops
- Chris Kristian, The Westport Group, Executive Vice President and Managing Director
- Gary Terry, The Westport Group, Executive Vice President and Managing Director
- David Fridovich, AWP board member, former Commander U.S. Special Operations Command
- John Jones, AWP Chief Development Officer, former Sergeant U.S. Marine Corps
